My Grandson Robert’s Birthday Song

My little grandson turns one-year old on September 22nd. What do you give your grandson who already has two dogs..Perk and Tucker and a Boston Bruins jersey?

I think I’m going to give him this song from his old granddad Mike.

You need a dog, a Bible, a woman you can love, a sense of humor and the refuge of a home you can always come home to when the world gets tough….among some other things.

Hope you like the song, Robert.

Miami Heat Takes 2-0 Lead Over Celtics

Not really a surprise to me. Miami is a team which flew under the radar screen most of the season. Their lineup is a mixture of experience and youth which has been managed beautifully by coach Erik Spoelstra.

I can’t go as far to say they could beat the Lakers, but of the three teams left minus the Lakers I would say they would have the best chance to derail LeBron in the Finals.

But given the Cinderella nature of what Denver has done to date in this post season…I should probably hold off just automatically advancing the Lakers into the Finals.

A Lakers-Heat finals given that Lebron won two rings playing for Pat Riley and Spoelstra would seem fitting as we head towards our Bubble NBA Finals.

As an NBA fan in general… I can’t wait to see if the lights in this LA series will burn too bright for the young Nuggets to make it a compelling Western Conference Finals.

I’m very excited to watch Jerami Grant’s role in the series. This why Denver made this trade. I’m not sure why Oklahoma City made the trade.

Football can wait–we now have a Dallas Stars vs. Tampa Lightning Stanley Cup Finals and a possible LeBron vs. Miami Heat reunion.

Pretty good…all things considered.

After Dark–Bubble Music and Other Deeper Thoughts

This is the singer who broke through with Peter Gabriel on his world wide tour way back when.

As our country has imploded during the last six months or so with the pandemic and other issues as well…’In Your Eyes’ for some reason has been a pillar of inner strength and peace for me. It’s my pandemic song. I close my eyes…listen to it…and it puts me into a Jonathon Livingston Gull mode and helps me ignore all this shit happenong around me.

Paula the diva black lab even commented on it recently…”Mike–you seem at peace with yourself. I’m proud of you.”

Music has been a savior for me during the last seven months or so.

I love this scene from the movie “Her”. This is the final scene of the movie when this guy finally starts coming to terms with himself. We as men all need an Amy Adams character in our life even if she’s a black lab who weighs seventy pounds and wears a hot pink collar.

Denver Stuns Clippers in Game 7 Rout, 104-89

An incredible night of sports both in the NBA and NHL bubbles. As far as bubble double dips—this may have been the best night so far for those of us who are passionate double dippers.

So much for the much anticipated Lakers vs. Clippers showdown. That’s not happening because like the Dallas Stars, the Denver Nuggets are making everyone tear up their NBA bracket sheets this morning.

The Clippers did the unthinkable…they blew a 3-1 series lead against the youthful yet determined Nuggets and now find themselves holding the mantle of still being the choking Clippers who can’t even get to a conference final…let alone win a title.

Hard to believe the Sacramento Kings actually fired coach Michael Malone at one point—but that’s why they’re still the Sacramento Kings kind of like in Cleveland the Cleveland Browns are still the Cleveland Browns.

Now we get to see the two best offensive big men in the game in AD and Jokic go at it in the Western Conference Finals. So I’ve quickly gotten over not getting to see LeBron vs. Kawhi.

Both Kawhi and Paul George were absolutely brutal in this game. It looked like they were throwing the game. They were terrible.

I would think we in Oklahoma will get to see Jerami Grant try his hand at defending LeBron some in the upcoming Western Finals. Good to see Jerami finally with a contender in Denver. He was one of my favorites while he was here in Oklahoma City.

Here’s a thought…if Billy Donovan went heads up against Doc Rivers in a series would either team win the series? Or would they just flounder into eternity with their owner making excuses for them?

Did you see that look on Steve Ballmer’s face late in the fourth quarter?

In the East…Miami showed they’re no fluke in the Eastern Finals with an electric three point win in overtime versus the Boston Celtics.

The Denver Nuggets, Miami Heat, and the Dallas Stars are in our hearts for those of us pretty much ignoring football until these two bubble tournaments draw to to a conclusion.

It’s like Tiger King. I swore I wouldn’t watch it, but here I am hooked on both bubbles.

In the NHL…the gritty New York Islanders fought tooth and nail and won 2-1 when Jordan Eberle scored the game winner in the second overtime. Tampa now leads that series 3-2 for those not living in the NHL bubble.

Jordan Eberle actually played some AAA hockey in Oklahoma City back when he was with the Edmonton Oilers. It was nice to see him have this moment in the spotlight.

So the Dallas Stars sit, watch, and rest as the Lightning and Islanders continue to wreak havoc on each other’s bodies.

A night of rest inside both bubbles on Wednesday night. A song would be nice.

I finally finished my Mike Gundy country song…’I Saw the Mullet King’ on the third try. This is the dude I want singing my song when we go to Nashville and record my only country music song to date.

Dallas Stars Advance to Stanley Cup Finals

The Dallas Stars behind their thirty-four year old backup goalie Anton Khudobin are returning to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time since 2000.

In a Game 5 thriller the Stars elimnated the Vegas Golden Knights by a 3-2 count in overtime to advance to the Finals to most likely face the Tampa Bay Lightning.

It’s a great story as in eight of their playoff wins they’ve come from behind to win games.

So while the rest of the sports world is primarliy watching the NBA and football… inside the NHL bubble the Dallas Stars have become the story in these Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Spencer Rattler Shines in First Start

I haven’t watched a football game at the college or pro level just yet. There’s been too much playoff hoops and hockey for me to absorb. I don’t watch ranked teams play teams like Missouri State. I just don’t. It tells you little.

This was a fill in game. I’d much rather have seen OU play at Army or Tennessee to get a gauge on OU’s team.

But it is what it is in the days of football being played during the Covid pandemic.

Spencer Rattler will be fun to watch. We all knew that already. True frosh Mims and McGowan not as much.

Sooners take a week off then host Kansas State which lost to Arkansas State yesterday. Probably by then I’ll be ready to start watching games. We haven’t seen O State yet, but I think most would agree the Big 12 should pretty much be a three or four team race with OU, O State, and Texas battling for the title.

The irony for Mike Gundy is that his team this year might very well be his best since Boone’s team won the 2011 Big 12 championship.

So Spencer Rattler shined against Missouri State. I’m actually more interested to see how much sophmore Spencer Sanders has improved since last season when he had trouble taking care of the football. If Spencer Sanders settles in like he should we in Oklahoma should have a great deal of fun this college football season regardless of the pandemic.

Pretty good football team which went on to beat Andrew Luck’s Stanford team in the Fiesta Bowl. Of course back then, Mike Gundy wasn’t fawning over his mullet or ways to shake down his alma mater for more money every year. I think when this team won this championship he was actually making less money than Travis Ford.

He looks so much better without the mullet. No wonder Boone left $30 in his will for Mike Gundy to get a haircut.

Lakers Advance to Western Conference Finals

With the exception of Game 1 it was very easy for the Lakers as they advance to the Western Conference Finals for the first time since 2010.

Once Rondo came back and got into the flow the Rockets were no match for LeBron’s Lakers. Both LeBron and Anthony Davis look very smooth together. The role guys are playing better and quite honestly the Lakers as a team look a little bit better with each game they’re playing together in the Bubble.

Coach Frank Vogel went small inserting Markieff Morris as his center to match up with the small ball Rockets.

We who love NBA hoops now eagerly await the LA Clippers advancing as well so we can see LeBeon vs. Kawhi in post season for the first time since 2014 when the Spurs beat the Miami Heat in five games.

Sad to see Harden and Russell go out so easily, but right now the Lakers are on a roll.

Boston Celtics Beat Raptors in Game 7, 92-87

Toronto gave what they had without Kawhi Leonard, but in the end it was Jayson Tatum and Marcus Smart who led the Celtics past the defending champs to advance to the East Finals versus the Miami Heat.

It could have gone either way in the game’s final two minutes, but Kyle Lowery fouling out was pretty much the last card played by the gritty Raptors.

A tough series for Pascal Siakam who was basically dominated by Tatum in the deciding game of the series.

This should be a great Eastern Conference Finals. Miami has some excellent pieces in its arsenal and seem to be a bit of a sleeper everyone is somewhat discounting.

Dallas Stars Take 2-1 Lead in West Finals

The Lakers pretty much handled the Houston Rockets from start to finish to take a commanding 3-1 series lead inside the NBA bubble. Pretty much a predictable yawner with LeBron and AD flexing their muscles when needed.

But inside the NHL bubble another team from Texas named the Dallas Stars won a thrilling Game 3 in the Western Conference Finals by a 3-2 count in OT.

Great hockey game as the underdog yet opportunistic Stars simply found a way on a night when the Vegas Golden Knights outshot them 42-22.

Dallas netminder Anton Khuobin kept the Stars in the game in the third period as the ice was slanted the entire twenty minutes of play with an onslaught of Vegas chances not finding the back of the net. Just some great saves in clucth situations.

It didn’t take long in overtime as the Stars caught the Knights in a bad change as Alexander Rudulov came wheeeling out of the neutral zone with nothing but space and the puck as he closed the game with an incredible goal.

Don’t look now but the Dallas Stars are two games away from reaching the Stanley Cup Finals.

The Stars are a smart hockey team. Smart hockey teams with good goaltending, a couple of hot finishers, and some luck can be a dangerous mix on the road to the Stanley Cup Finals.

The collective Eyes of Texas should shift from the Rockets to the Stars because the hockey team actually has a chance of reaching the Finals.

Bob Woodward on Sixty Minutes This Sunday to Discuss New Book…’Rage’

I haven’t read Bob Woodward’s newest book on Donald Trump yet. So until I read the book and see his interview on Sixty Minutes all we have is this to steer us as we careen towards our presdential election.

Since Woodward has won two Pulitzer’s his books are diligently fact checked. So we’ll see what he says on Sunday. Isn’t it amazing he gets Trump on tape with all these recordings on the record and the U.S. Justice Department can’t get his tax returns in four years.
