Here we go …it’s either put up or shut up time for OU as a team beyond Caleb Williams to start showing they have an argument for the Committee to consider. I believe OU will play well today. I believe their now healthier defensive backfield coupled with Isaiah Thomas, Nik Bonitto, Brian Asamoah, and others will pull their link on the chain today in Waco. I also believe OU’s offensive line will play better this week than they did against the Texas Tech Red Raiders. I like OU to win, but I wouldn’t take this game either way at OU -6.5.

I wonder if Marcus Major will be the power back close out back today in Waco. He’s an OKC kid from Millwood. Marcus along with former John Marshall Bear Justin Broiles could both be unsung heros for the Sooners coming down the stretch.

On my mano y mano versus the spread against Chris Jackson …I’m getting abused.

Chris Jackson 16-7, MJ (same as Michael Jordan) 11-12. I need to catch some magic in a bottle in a hurry is all I can say at this point.

My picks today are:

Texas… I’m taking the emotionally fragile Texas Longhorns at home and giving the 30 points as they attempt to get bowl eligible.

Texas A&M at Ole Miss…this is an extremely interesting game to me. A&M is still in play in the SEC West if Auburn could derail Alabama in the Iron Bowl at home. This is a sneaky huge game today in the college football landscape. I’ll take the Aggies and give the 2.5 in Oxford. Rememeber the third place team in the SEC gets the automatic Sugar Bowl berth vs. a Big 12 team.

On my upset special…I’m taking Penn State + 2 versus Jim Harbaugh and the Michigan Wolverines.

I have to admit…I’m jacked about OU today. This in essence is the first of four potential play in or play out games for the Sooners. My game face is very much on. Chris Jackson is probably pacing liked a caged Tiger about right now.

It’s time to see what OU is or isn’t. Let’s go.

OU hosts Steve Henson’s UTSA ball club tonight in Norman with each team entering the game at 1-0.

The Sooners in their opening win over Northwestern State looked decent in their first game considering it was just their second outing together as a team. It was the first win of the Porter Moser Era in Norman and tonight the Sooners will be looking to improve their record to 2-0 on the young season.

My three stars were 1 Jalen Hill, 2 Jordan Goldwire, and 3 Tanner Groves.

Jalen had the best game of his college career, but the leader of the team will unquestionably be Duke transfer point guard Jordan Goldwire. Jordan’s defense, transition baskets, and playmaking will be critical as the Sooners attempt to make the NCAA Tournament in Coach Moser’s first season in Norman.

As Jordan goes…the guys around him will need to be able to make the wide open shots he’ll create for them.

EJ Harkless needs to relax, take a deep breath, and realize how many good shots he’s going to get just playing off of Jordan’s unselfish play. As in allowing Jordan’s play to meld into him getting wide open looks. Both EJ Harkless and Jacob Groves need to find their shots in this game as after tonight the schedule for OU picks up substantially.

Meanwhile in OKC’s Bricktown the 4-6 tanking Thunder host the 5-7 Sacramento Kings in a game pitting two teams who in my mind are fairly close to being the same type of ball clubs this NBA season. That being… two teams who won’t make the playoffs, but are probably too good to be tanking shamelessly.

Clearly… the OU game will be my first priority watch since they actually compete with the intent to win games, but both the Thunder and the Kings have entertaining players who if they played on legit NBA teams trying to win games instead of tanking would probably become NBA darlings from coast to coast.

I mean, from an entertainment standpoint basketball wise… Shai Gilgeous Alexander and former OU National Player of the Year Buddy Hield are fun to watch. But again when you calibrate the fact you don’t know if the Thunder are going to tank in the fourth period and lose intentionally it’s really kind of stupid paying to watch this bullshit.

When we got home from the Arkansas foilage trip the other night…I sat down and turned on the Thunder’s game versus New Orleans with the Thunder leading by nineteen points entering the final period..

That fourth period was some of the most horrific NBA basketball I’ve ever observed by two purported NBA teams in the same quarter of play.

As if each team was challenging the other to be worse and lose the game. Some of the play by Shai was laughable. He’s too good of a player to be wasting his carrer with this nonsense. It will at some point if not already diminish or thwart his potential as a player. Much like some of the nonsense Russell Westbrook was allowed to do in Oklahoma City ruined his overall game.

I don’t need that bullshit. I’m too old for that bullshit. Besides I’ve adopted Golden State, Miami, and the sneaky Memphis Grizzlies as my three adopted NBA teams this season.

Plus, I’ve got Porter Moser’s ball club to watch…in as much as it appears they’re trying to get better and acheive some team goals other than losing games by design.

What does America mean to me? I means I was fortunate enough to be born an American and had opportunitities of which billions of other humans on the globe have not been able to experience.

Our freedoms weren’t just given to us without great sacrifices made by others. Our American soul has been challened throughout our history. We live in the greatest democracy in the history of the world and it literally made me ill on January 6th when I saw our own people not only assault our democracy, but as well display utter disdain towards the greatest document for Freedom ever written…the U.S. Constitution.

Being an American to me also means the rest of the world is looking at us and hoping we continue to be the voice and shining example of what it means to live a life where you can not only be free, but you can dream to be your best and help others along the way dream of being their best.

These three paragraphs above are why I never in any way connected with Donald Trump in my realm of thought of what it means to be an American.

But to my credit… I’m certain every U.S. President from Grover Cleveland to Joe Biden would nod their head in agreement with me as to what I’ve written above on what it means to be an American.

If you served our country in the pursuit of liberty and freedom… Thank you.

So…given the forecast of storms last night my wife and I decided to hit the road northwest to Fayeteville, Arkansas with the hope of catching the fall colors at peak just before the storms rolled thru last night.

In all candor this video I’ve put on here doesn’t do justice to what we saw on our tour yesterday from Siloam Springs thru the northwest outskirts of Fayeteville to our final destination of Lake Sequoyah just east of the epic White River.

The colors were a stunning combination of peak red, orange, and yellow. We couldn’t have been luckier the way we held off all the way to November 10th to make this trek.

This was our first time to make this trip since the pandemic and the little Amish bakery where we usually buy something was closed….which was sad. But our favorite Italian restaurant in Siloam Spring…Mrs. Z’s Italian Kitchen was still open. It was great and thriving as usual. Nothing goes better with a foilage drive than a chicken parm or chicken marsala.

The college town of Fayetteville is probably where my wife and I are going to co-live at some point. Our family is building a home on a mountain overlooking Lake Sequoyah and is just getting started. It may take two years. No big hurry.

But that will time out perfectly as the Sooners at that point we would hope are playing in the same SEC West pod with the Arkansas Razorbacks, Missouri Tigers, and pathetic non-SEC worthy Texas Longhorns.

My wife asked, ” Won’t you miss having an NBA team twenty minutes away?”

I replied, ” Don’t think so…given we haven’t had NBA caliber basketball in Oklahoma City since Kevin left to go play with Klay and Steph. If what we’re seeing right now from Presti is any indication of the Thunder’s ‘sustainable’ future…I’ll be getting on the Porter Moser’s hoops train and not looking back with much regret.”

I then added, “My main concern will be if Alabama goes after Lincoln Riley when Saban retires.”

I still find it completely awesome that Oklahoma City could ever have an NBA team which made it to the NBA Finals in 2012, but you can’t live in the past. It’s always moving forward.

Let’s be blunt…Sam Presti without KD is like Belichick without Tom Brady. Player made the coach/GM. Just saying.

For an older guy like me…Fayetteville be will be perfect. Of course…I’ll still bleed Crimson, but what will happen is that Arkansas sports will become my next favorite program except when it’s an OU- Arkansas matchup.

There’s just something I find very alluring about living just outside of a college town like Fayetteville with world class fishing of every sort around you….plus the great food and inherit beauty of the rolling hills of Northwest Arkansas.

Arkansas is called the Natural State and it pretty much is. I’ll have to see if I can find my old White River trout guide who used to be Bill Clinton’s barber. We’ll have alot to talk about after the four years of the grifter pos Trump’s dictatorial abuse of our constitution.

There’s another lit Italian restaurant in Eureka Springs… I’ll review it next time we’re back.

The winter fishing at Lake Sequoyah is pretty good. So next time back in a month or so I’ll have a Mike’s Travel Bolg entry on wintertime fishing under the bridge at Lake Sequoyah with emphasis on catching black crappie… plus the eggplant parmesan review from Eureka Springs.

And…there’s a holiday X-Mas light display on campus I’ll have to put on my travel blog before Christmas Day.

Sam Presti left me no choice. I have to diversify the blog since no one apparently knows if the Thunder are trying to win, trying to lose, or thinking of moving the team at some point.

It is what is as far as the Thunder…but it’s always moving forward for me. Mike never looks back.

There’s no need for me to look at the second poll at this point. OU is an undefeated Power 5 team with perhaps the most exciting/influential player in the country playing the most important position on the field.

OU like O State controls its own destiny. Win out and it doesn’t matter what the Committee behind closed doors think about OU.

OU’s defense needs to play better for certain, but moreso for the fact of running the table and then being a viable opponent versus either Georgia or Alabama in a national semi-finals game.

I have no angst whatsover against Georgia or Alabama. I actually admire what Saban has done at Alabama and every OU fan with any honesty attached would agree with that admiration of what Alabama has done the past decade in college football.

The Big 10 is a different story. For the most part the Big 10 is a collection of tea sippers. Again takeaway the Cinderella Cardale Jones story back in 2014 when Captain Lapdance was running the Buckeyes and tell me what else the Big 10 in the College Football Playoff Era has done besides the Buckeyes getting smoked 52-24 by Alabama in last season’s national championship game.

We can take a recess if you need the time to organize your thoughts before answering the question, Big 10 posers.

How’d that NCAA Basketball Tournament go for you last spring? That’s what I thought. We know how it went. Your teams were irrelevant in March Madness. Baylor, Gonzaga, UCLA, and Houston turned out to be relevant.

Share with me the rich trail of success Michigan has had with Jim Harbaugh running the Wolverine ship. Share with me what happened this past weekend to Spartan Nation versus Purdue.

In a court of law you’d be laughed out of the courtroom defending the Big 10’s claim to be in the same discussion as Alabama and their SEC companions.

If Georgia’s first ranked defense can carry their poll position then I would ask of Your Honor and the Committee how could you exclude a 12-1 Oklahoma State team which just beat Oklahoma twice and has the nation’s third ranked total defense?

Your Honor…please remind the Committee they’re under oath and to answer the question knowing the penalty for perjury.

The penalty is the Committee would be exposed as a group of Big 10 poser wannabees with an acute case of Alabama-SEC penis envy.

Truth hurts.

College football Op-Ed by Mike Jackson

Mike Gundy, dude….I don’t know how all this happened, but somehow I became Boone’s spiritual portal of sorts to communicate with you. He’s the one pushing me to write the book….Mullet King: The Boone Pickens-Mike Gundy Saga.

I told him though if you beat OU twice I’m changing the title of the book to Mike Gundy: His Own Man.

Boone wants me to point out… you haven’t rung any bells since 2011 and he thinks you owe him a couple.

So…Mike Gundy…it’s time for you and your football team to ring a couple of bells this football season.

Don’t be afraid of winning.

Winning is fun.

Porter Moser’s first basketball season in Norman will be my favorite basketball beat on my blog this season. Not even close.

The Thunder with a $1.6 billion valuation by Forbes and more draft picks than they know what do with are still tanking when they really don’t have to be. It was refreshing for me to hear Mark Rodgers on the Sports Animal agree with me. Like me he sees the Thunder right now just about where the Memphis Grizzles were at this point last season.

The realistic goal in Oklahoma City NBA-wise isn’t to dream you’re going to win the O’Brien Trophy, but more to the point be competitive enough to not only be NBA relevant, but to be Oklahoma disposable sports entertainment dollar competitive in this market.

Portland taking Greg Oden in front of you only happens once in a basketball lifetime. That train left the station for San Franciso and is now in Brooklyn.

And tragically–Mike’s Boynton’s O State team isn’t eligible to play in the Big 12 Tournament or the NCAA Tournament this basketball season. I hurt for Mike Boynton and his players.

I was incredibly excited about seeing Avery Anderson and Rondel Walker in the Big Dance this March. Rondel was the best OKC high school player his senior year while playing at PC West and he’s fun to watch as is Avery who’s a late first round projection.

So when you take the above in consideration…Porter Moser’s Sooners of the three teams in reality is the only one playing a legitimate basketball season. No tanking, no probation.

OU opened tonight at home versus Northwestern State from Lousiana and won 77-59 before a half empty Lloyd Noble Arena. Student section was decent…the donor tea sipper seats always pretty much stay empty until football season is winding down. OU football donors are a trip.

Caleb Williams was in attendence and apparently loves the college life in Norman. What an infectious smile that kid has.

I thought OU played well for the most part.

My three stars of the game for OU were 1 Jalen Hill, 2 Jordan Goldwire, and 3 Tanner Groves.

Coach Moser looks like he already has a 9-10 man rotation in place with two of his true freshmen guards CJ Nolan and Alston Mason very much in the mix already. Bijan Cortes from Kingfisher who looked really sharp in the exhibition game didn’t get much time, but he’s there if and when the need for him to add more point guard depth is needed.

Bijan’s court vision is the best of the three freshmen guards, but he needs some work in the weight room. He has one of those bodies right now that Sam Presti seems to crave using a first round pick on. Play your cards right, Bijan and you could be a Presti lottery pick next summer. Don’t laugh.

Moj Gibson played okay and EJ Harkless had a tough offensive night and seemed to be pressing offensively to me. When EJ’s overall two zone game picks up and he settles in with what Coach Moser needs from him is when this team will look like a team which could challenge for a top four or five seed in the rugged Big 12.

The pieces are there though for this be a decent basketball team.

For the most part the team looked good with Jalen, Jordan, and Tanner leading the way in Coach Moser’s first regular season game as the head coach of the Sooners.

Next up on Friday night University of Texas at San Antonio with former OU assistant coach Steve Henson head coaching the Roadrunners.

Steve was an All Big 8 point guard at K State who played for Lon Kruger and then was an assistant for Coach Kruger at OU.

I ran into Steve Henson one late night at a DFW terminal while we were both waiting to catch connecting flights. He was recruiting players for UTSA and I was coming back from Denver.

I think he was actually flattered I recognized him and he was great to talk to in regards to his time with Coach Kruger and his new job at UTSA.

It has been my experience that basketball coaches are the best coaches to talk to if you’re just polite and don’t act like a jerk. Maybe it’s because Oklahoma is just so football crazy, but the great hoops coaches in this part of the country have somehow found my way thru the years…from Abe Lemons, to Paul Hansen to Billy Tubbs to Jim Kerwin to Eddie Sutton to Jeff Capel to Lon Kruger to Steve Hansen.

High school coaches are even better. You haven’t lived until you’ve talked to Blake Griffin’s father Tommy after a game. So much passion and love for the game. You don’t see that with the NBA guys after they start making big money.

I haven’t run into Mike Boynton just yet, but we will and we have mutual friends and it will go well. I’ve never run into Kelvin Sampson, but once his Houston team starts playing in the Big 12…I’ll figure out a way to have a nice talk with him.

Houston at O State is a game which would be fun.

The thing with hoops coaches is that they’re so passionate about their game they just love to talk the game like Fran Fraschilla and Ron Franklin did with me that night after Kevin Durant’s only game played at Lloyd Noble versus Blake Griffin.

Friday night..Coach Moser’s second game in Norman …then the schedule gets going with better teams in a hurry. This isn’t going to be CupCake City very long in Year 1 for Porter Moser.

Yes…I do believe former Mullet King and Boone Pickens’ antagonist Mike Gundy along with his Oklahoma State Cowboys do control their own destiny coming down the home stretch of this college football season.

I believe the same with OU as well. But for O State here’s the thing…if they close out as a one loss team they’ll have closing wins over TCU, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, and then Oklahoma again in the Big 12 Championship Game to go along with their to date resume. Losing 24-21 at Ames isn’t a horrible loss.

If that scenario unfolded O State would finish at 12-1 as a conference champion with back to back wins over the Oklahoma Sooners.

I think O State gets in the College Football Playoff if the Cowboys run the table. Not a doubt in my mind because O State currently ranks third defensively in the nation with only Georgia and Big Ten soft Wisconsin ranked ahead of Jim Knowles’ once in a generational O State defense.

Here’s Week 10 from the previously used BCS Model…keep in mind I have O State #6 in my poll and I bleed Crimson. My take on O State is beyond objective…considering my complete disdain for Kayse ‘Aurora’ Schrum.

Just win and for one time in my lifetime ring the bell and for once be the party carrying OU and the other nine current Big 12 members.

I don’t know if Jimmy Traber reads my blog, but if he doesn’t he should.

Mike Gundy, Kayse Shrum, Chad Wieberg, just win out and you get to go play Georgia in the national semi-final and live OU’s football life for a season.

Just win, baby… I’ll be the first one signing the petition to drop Texas and instead lobby for you coming to the SEC with the Sooners inthat West pod with Arkansas and Missouri.

One we get to mid fall and the days shorten considerably…I try and read a book a week until say February 25th or whenever spring begins to awaken again in Oklahoma.

By that time… between my business and March Madness my leisure reading slackens to almost nil other than just the sports and front page story type of stuff.

I finished the Kirk Herbstreit biography written by Woj. If you’re a college football fan of any serious degree… I would highly suggest the book not just for the football, but for the human journey of Kirk’s life in which he was very candid about in sharing with his readers. I’d give the book four out of five stars on my review. It would be a great X-mas gift for a football fanatic.

The book I’m reading now is by two time Pulitizer winner Bob Woodward and Bob Costa from Washington Week in Review which airs on PBS.

This is a great five star book which is Pulitizer worthy and if you’re open minded and not living your life on either the far right or far left lanes of extremism you’ll consider this a must read for every American who thinks democracy is kind of a neat thing.

If you’re the type who comes home every night and sits in front of Tucker Carlson with your Sean Hannity sippy cup…. you won’t make it thru ten pages of this book. You just won’t…I’m sorry to write.

If you’re a far left type who thinks AOC rocks and everything she says is the Sermon on the Mount you’ll maybe make it to page seventy-five or so when you read what Nancy Pelosi and even to some degree Bernie Sanders thinks about the new radical left in Congress.

They pretty much think what Joe Manchin thinks….they just don’t put it out in public as much.

The book is a duel biography of Donald Trump and Joe Biden from the Election of 2016 to the January 6th insurrection of our national capitol.

As with all Bob Woodward books this book is written in a riveting narrative and was researched with great diligence which included two-hundred hours of interviews with people who were part of the story with the exception of two people… Donald Trump and Joe Biden.

If you’re in one of those two lanes…I don’t think you’ll enjoy the book.

If you’re a moderate or an independent like me..I think you’ll love the book.

But now I need to get back to finishing what could be Bob Woodward’s third Pulitzer Prize award winning book.

My advice to you within the GOP which allowed Donald Trump to be your party’s nominee a second time in 2020 would simply be this coming from a former moderate Republican who left the party in 2000…maybe in 2024 you could bring yourself to nominate a candidate of which Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, and Bush 41 could actually stomach enough to in theory vote for that person.

I didn’t include Bush 43 on that list because I’m closing with Bush 43. I was highly critical of Bush 43 during his presidency, but in historical retrospect I would at this point after witnessing the four years of Donald Trump have to admit Bush 43 and Dick Cheney compared to Donald Trump come out looking like FDR in the year 2021.

I may not agree with 43 and Liz Cheney on some things, but at the end of the day I at least feel as if we’re all three Americans who value the fragile concept of democracy.

Please read the book… if you’re one of those 75 million who voted for Donald Trump a second time in 2020.

For the first time this NBA regular season… the Thunder earned a win without Laker head coach Frank Vogel and Lebron James looking on from the opposing bench with looks or horror and disbelief on their faces.

As with the two wins overs the Lakers, this Thunder 99-94 win over the tanking San Antonio Spurs wasn’t an instant NBA classic for the ages, but to the relief of the Pay.Com Arena crowd assembled on an autumn Sunday evening it wasn’t a loss either.

The Thunder started slow early and looked to be the worst of the two tanking teams for which Sam Presti has been employed by in the NBA, but at the end Mike Muscala made sure on this night the Thunder weren’t viewed as the worst team in the NBA.

When Clay Bennett said he wanted to follow the San Antonio holy grail NBA template he wasn’t kidding. On this night what we saw in Oklahoma City vs. the Spurs were two teams slogging the same NBA tanking road back to relevance simultaneously.

It was ugly early as the Thunder couldn’t buy a basket and fell behind by sixteen points. But on this night Coach D outdueled Pop as if something was on the line besides losing another NBA game intentionally.

I almost cried watching San Antonio play like this. This isn’t how Pop should finish his career.

What I would say about this game is that veteran Mike Muscala came off the bench and played like the best NBA player on the floor despite getting only 14 minutes of court time while almost every other member of the Thunder for the most part couldn’t hit the Pacific Ocean with a basketball if they were standing two feet away from water.

Muscala was sublime and along with Kenrich Williams has been one of the few bright spots in this second straight season on losing games by design despite claiming ‘sustainability’ on the witness stand under oath.

In his fourteen minutes of play Muscala scored an uber efficient 20 points on a 5-6 shooting night while adding a blocked shot to his stat line.

But what Mike Muscala gave most to those in attendance was the appearance the Thunder organization isn’t totally oblivious to the fact their own fanbase needs to see their team win some games here and there during the 82 game tanking death march into April.

Little Nick Gallo, bless his heart, stood next to Mike Muscala for the postgame Player of the Game interview and beamed as if the Thunder had come back from the dead to beat Steph and Klay in Game 6. I’ll give Little Nick Gallo this much… he’ll shame himself to no end whatsoever to earn his paycheck as the Thunder’s sideline version of a little mini Craig Sager type only without the cool jackets, smart insights, and Journey of Life humanity attached.

At 95-94 with the Thunder leading in the final two minutes…rookie Aussie Josh Giddy made a nice play on a penetration and dish to Lu Dort for a basket which I would describe as the best basketball play of the night for the Thunder. Otherwise Josh struggled and didn’t look the part of a player taken with the 6th pick in the recent NBA draft.

It was fitting though with 3.5 seconds left in this game…Mike Muscala nailed two free throws to give the Thunder a two possession lead and their first win of the season over a team which doesn’t allow Russell Westbrook to handle the ball in the last six minutes of an NBA game.

But for me there were two other bright spots….Darius Bazely and Jeremiah Robinson-Earl. I thought both of these guys showed flashes of what they can be with patience and encouragement from people like me.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was okay, but nothing special from a guy on a max contract deal playing at home before a crowd which knows their team isn’t supposed to win more 25 games this season.. He didn’t make my Thunder three stars in this game.

My three stars went…1 Mike Muscala, 2 Darius Bazely, and 3 Jeremiah Robinson-Earl…. with a customary nod to Kenrich Williams for his total professionalism and hustle every time he takes the floor. Somebody raised that young man the right way is all I can say. Total self accountability with some compassion attached to his basketball soul.

Mike Muscala and Kenrich…thank you.

Next up…the New Orleans Pelicans who have been even worse than the Thunder and Spurs so far this season this young NBA season….so that could very well be a third win in a row for the Thunder.

I hate to be such a sarcastic pisser on these occassional Thunder recaps of mine… but when you tank like a street whore somebody amongst the throng of onlookers needs to write something honest every now and again.

It is what it is.

If I was an NBA general manager and just hired a sideline reporter for my basketball team… this is what I would do: I’d take him or her to lunch then we would watch this ten minute video together.
