We live in a time of enormous cynicism…we do. When I first saw the clip with Jake Olson long snapping on a USC extra point the first week of this season, I had no idea what his story entailed. Then I sat down and watched a special segment on Jake on an ESPN E60 segment. It floored me and genuinely inspired me. I will admit I cried. It’s such a beautiful story on multiple fronts I wanted it on my blog.
I can only speak for myself…I needed to be inspired, to be touched, to be awed in a positive manner.

I had to take a few days off from the blog. Harvey, Irma, and Caligula were too much for me all rolled into a fortnight. Seriously, the world seems surreal to me right now. Like I’m drunk and can’t see anything with much of any clarity. Our country has gone crazy. I can’t sleep much and I’m having some bizarre dreams.
I have to admit though, I did laugh my ass off when Caligula joined forces with Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi this week. Will it continue to happen? Maybe. Caligula likes to win and in case you haven’t noticed the Republican party despite having won all these governorships and state legislatures can’t govern. Oklahoma is a prime example. It is the most shit ass run state government imaginable. Borderline third world nation. If only Puerto Rico can become a state then Oklahoma can rank 51st in education and in overall adult stupidity. So—eventually if Caligula wants a few things on his presidential resume he might need to hook up with the Dems here and there.
The simple problem with the Republican party is simple—they are held hostage by the American Freedom Caucus and these idiots will never allow any mainstream legislation to pass through their gauntlet. Keep in mind, this group for the most part supported Ted Cruz—enough said. Math, science, reading, globalization…nah—who would need any of that bullshit.
Maybe I’ll be better when the Thunder start playing again. It’s not like I enjoy writing about this shit on my basketball blog, but it’s like watching a car burn on the side of the road. I can’t take my eyes off it even though I swear I will.
I don’t think I’ve had Reverend Al on my blog to date. This might be the right spot. Is Caligula a Dem? Nah. He’s nothing. He doesn’t believe in anything except pleasing himself. He has no ideology. I wonder which former great GOP prez Mike Pence will compare Caligula to this week? Actually, this would be the week to compare him to TR in that what transpired this week was somewhat Bull Moose Partyesque. But none of the core know anything about Teddy Roosevelt so don’t waste it.
OU last won a football national championship in 2000 when it opened the season with a 55-14 win over UTEP. It was Bob Stoops’ second season and the Sooners were coming off a 7-5 season in which the Sooners lost to Ole Miss in the Independence Bowl. I was there with my dad, so I remember that New Years Eve well when a near drunken riot broke out in the stands in that piece of junk Shreveport stadium which would be subpar for the upper tier Texas high school programs. None of us had any inkling whatsoever that the Sooners would be twelve months away from winning the national championship.
Obviously, Lincoln Riley and his Sooners have a Herculean task in front of them against the Buckeyes next week in Columbus, but if you look at this team it kind of has that same feel as the no names from 2000 who went on to beat Florida State 13-2 in the national championship game. Back in the opener, not too many took notice of linebacker Torrance Marshall’s suspension, but as the season wore on–Marshall and fellow linebacker Rocky Calmus became the competitive soul of the team.
I thought it would be fun to take a look back at the 2000 opener against UTEP and remember the names of what was basically a blue collar team which had great chemistry and somehow found a way to win it all.
Any real OU fan gets goose bumps when they watch this Torrance Marshall pick six — which basically saved the season in College Station versus the A&M Aggies. Probably the single most defining play in the Bob Stoops era at OU.
He just can’t help himself. It’s always about size with this guy and sometimes it’s even about Little Marco Rubio’s perceived lack of size. He’s just such a hopeless, wretched narcissist–he can’t ever get beyond size.
What can you say? People are dying in Texas. Some are losing every possession they ever had…and Caligula is holding a pep rally in Corpus like he’s in West Virginia.
I guess we should just be glad he didn’t blow his nose on the flag or drop a few Nazi or KKK praises to the Corpusites. That’s where the bar is with this guy. The quintessential Rodney Dangerfield character from Caddy Shack ostensibly running the United States of America. That’s how low the bar is with Caligula.
If you voted for Caligula…please watch. The notion that there is something even slightly Reaganesque about Donald Trump is beyond laughable. If Reagan were still living, I’d already have a video on here of him saying pretty much what John Danforth wrote last week in his Op-Ed piece.
The Caligula-Russia story unraveled even more yesterday, but I’m not in a mood to write about those people right now. It’s hard to watch what’s happening in Texas currently and focus on the impeachment of a sitting U.S. president not even eight months into his first term.
Instead, a nice dog story. Amongst all the tragedy in Texas, there are heart warming and inspirational stories which give hope that the decency of people in America still exists. It’s always existed and always will. There was no need for a con artist huckster with red ball caps — America was already great, but in need of a serious reflective look in the mirror.
As the world watches Hurricane Harvey in relation to Houston, I can’t help but think of Victoria. I spent a Sunday morning there last October on my way back home from a fishing trip in Port O’Connor. The guys who took me on the trip have a ritual to stop at a certain café in downtown Victoria and enjoy a truly great breakfast before getting on with the long haul back to Edmond.
I loved the place. It’s a charming town. It’s a place where the people’s natural friendliness does not go unnoticed or unappreciated.
The café is the hub of the community. I hope it wasn’t totaled in the storm and they can get back to some sense of normalcy even though from what I’m seeing it’s very tough with more heavy rain headed their way and rivers beginning to crest.
Praying for Victoria and all the people in south Texas. This is stunning to watch.
