Westbrook Signs Extension Becoming the Face of the Franchise For Now

Who would have thought this several years ago? Durant was supposed to be the one who would stay, but instead turned into the typical douchebag we see far too much of in sports nowadays. BTW, Tramel did indeed call Durant a douchebag several weeks ago then begged off saying he didn’t even know what the word meant.

C’mon, Tramel. It you’re gonna say it, then live with your words. Don’t be a prude.

I’m fairly certain I know what the word means and how unfortunate it is Durant turned out to be the typical pro sports douchebag while Russell Westbrook for at least the next two years is going to see where all this can lead in Oklahoma City.

Russell Westbrook now becomes the official face of the Oklahoma City Thunder for at least a while. He stayed when it was really a very big deal he did stay for every person residing in the state of Oklahoma.

It’s been a brutal year in Oklahoma City. The price of oil cratered and thousands of jobs have been lost in this city. The state faces a $1.3 billion shortfall. The state of Oklahoma currently ranks dead last in education. One of the city’s leading visionaires Aubrey McClendon died in a car crash. Kevin Durant took the easy way out and became a Warrior when he didn’t have to be a douchebag and could have just signed a one year extension.

But Russell Westbrook has decided he might stay a bit longer and see what this team can be.

Gone are Durant, Ibaka, and Waiters having been replaced with Oladipo, Ilyasova, Sabonis, and Abrines. But here’s the thing, the way basketball is played currently in the NBA it’s very much a point guard league. And the Thunder just retained one of the two best point guards in this league.

The Green Bay Packers are my favorite NFL team. The OKC Thunder are my favorite NBA team. I feel much better now knowing my two favorite teams still have Aaron Rodgers and Russell Westbrook in place.

You have to be realistic though. The whorish super team in Oakland is clearly the team to beat in the Western Conference. But today was a great day in Oklahoma. The kid I used to call Wild Thing showed us there’s still a reason to hope. Showed us he’s the one who’s still here and appears to actually be somewhat fond of the place.

Nothing in pro sports is permanent. We should never put athletes on a pedestal…ever. But Russell Westbrook made everyone in Oklahoma City feel a little bit better today not only about the Thunder, but about the city as well.

Made us feel better about ourselves and the immediate future. It’s funny how sports can galvanize a city or a community and make everyone forget their problems. But that’s just what Russell Westbrook did today.

Good for him.
